John Robert McLean

1946 - 2024

On February 1st, 2024, at the age of 77, Mr. John Robert McLean passed away at Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec after a long illness. He was born in Red Deer, Alberta on September 12th, 1946.

John is sadly missed by his loving wife of 47 years, Sharon and their children: Heather, Bridget (Zakaria), Barbara (Jeff), Shirley (Gary); grandchildren: Alex (Adrian), Dominic, Ali, Sukayna, Zahra, Cambie, Della, Divinity, Mercedes, Tony (Justina), Roy (Jennifer); and 4 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Roberta (Garry), his brother Robert (Anita), many special nieces and nephews, cousins, loved ones and friends.

John was predeceased by his grandson Zain; his parents: Robert and Nora; his twin sister Joan; his brother-in-law Bryce; his wife’s parents: Cecil and Phyllis; and his brothers-in-law: Gary, Dave, and Mark.

He joined the Royal Canadian Navy at a young age and after that worked as a nursing orderly at the University of Alberta hospital for many years. In 1982, he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. At that time, his focus shifted to keeping his body strong and his relationships stronger. It was important to him that he spent his time with those he cared for as he knew his physical endurance was limited. He managed to stay out of a wheelchair until just recently.

John was a man of few words and always had a twinkle in his eye. A single facial expression or raise of his eyebrows could tell you everything he was thinking. He had a love of marching bands, Star Wars, airplanes, and chess. He had a special relationship with his grandchildren, and he made sure they were blessed with those same interests. John loved reading, learning, and sharing his extensive knowledge about everything. He enjoyed nothing more than having a long, informative conversation with people.

John lived in Alberta for 75 years and in 2021 left on an adventure to move to Quebec. Unfortunately, in January 2023 his health deteriorated, and he never fully recovered. He showed an amazing amount of strength and resilience while facing significant challenges. He was comforted by all the love and support provided by so many, near and far.

Cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 27 at 2:00 pm in St. Albert Funeral Home, 9 Muir Drive.
